Job Summary:
In an injection mold manufacturing company, a Spotter is responsible to check the contact surfaces between the moving side and the stationary side. Spotters use colourants to identify which surfaces are making contact, and which are not.
Job Responsibilities:
Your supervisor may from time to time ask you to perform other related duties not specifically included in this job description. This job's key responsibilities include:
- Task Preparation and Execution : The Spotter is responsible to prepare the tool for spotting both mechanisms and parting line, as appropriate . The Spotter is responsible to heat up the mold and maintain proper temperature controls using a thermolator . The Spotter is responsible to perform any handwork required for opening vents, mastering pockets, and stoning parting lines. The Spotter is also responsible to understand different plastic material properties and understand how that impacts the spotting process. Fitting and timing parting line straight and pressure locks is also the responsibility of the Spotter.
- Quality Control: Spotting involves reviewing the steel conditions for defects, such as surface imperfections, or dimensional inaccuracies The Spotter must be trained to recognize quality issues and take corrective measures to maintain product quality standards.
- Workplace Safety: Spotting requires working near injection molding machinery, which can pose safety hazards. The Spotter must adhere to all safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for themselves and their colleagues.
- Communication: Effective communication is essential for the Spotter to relay information about machine performance, quality issues, and corrective actions to supervisors, operators, and other team members.
- Documentation: The Spotter may be responsible for maintaining accurate records of production data, quality inspection results, and any issues encountered during the spotting process. This documentation helps to track performance metrics and identify areas for improvement.
- Continuous Improvement: Spotting involves identifying opportunities for process improvement and efficiency gains. The Spotter may be involved in initiatives to improve production techniques or reduce waste.
Job Qualifications:
- Education: minimum is a High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) e quivalent .
- Skills & Experience
- Technical skills: 3 years of spotting experience with preference for those with multi-shot rotational tool spotting.
- Technical knowledge: Vertical mill (Fly Cutting, Drilling, etc.) , two shot compression , icing line seal off on lighting tools . Mold making experience , welding ability , and knowledge of tool build would be considered an asse t.
- Attention to Detail: Spotting requires keen observation skills and the ability to identify defects or abnormalities in steel that will carry over into the molded parts. Attention to detail is essential for maintaining quality standards.
- Manual Dexterity: The ability to handle and manipulate small parts and perform manual tasks such as grinding and fitting.
- Communication Skills: Effective communication is important for relaying information about quality issues, and corrective actions to supervisors and team members.
- Problem-Solving Abilities: Spotting may involve troubleshooting machine malfunctions or addressing quality issues as they arise. Candidates should have the ability to think critically and problem-solve in a fast-paced environment.
- Safety Awareness: Spotter roles often involve working with machinery and equipment, so candidates must have a strong commitment to workplace safety and follow all safety protocols and procedures.
- Continuous Improvement Experience: Exposure to continuous improvement methodologies such as Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing can be an asset.

- Tolerance to Temperature and Noise: Automotive manufacturing environments can be noisy, and temperature conditions may vary. S hould be able to work in these conditions comfortably and safely.
- Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): must be willing to use and comply with the use of PPE, such as safety glasses, ear protection, gloves, and other safety gear, as required by the manufacturing environment.
Environmental, Health and Safety Expectations:
Employee Responsibilities:
- Work in compliance with ABC Standards, EHS Policies, Local, Regional and Federal acts, bylaws, and regulations.
- Report any spills or leaks immediately.
- Use personal protective equipment and clothing as required.
- All Employees shall follow Site Workplace Safety Guidelines.
- No Employee shall remove or make ineffective any protective device and must report missing or damaged protective devices.
- No Employee shall use or operate any equipment, machine, or device in a manner that may endanger themself or another worker, including the operation of equipment, machine, or device without proper training or certifications where required.
- No Employee shall engage in horseplay or unsafe acts.
- Employees must immediately report any hazard(s), unsafe act/condition, near miss or incident regardless of severity to their Group Leader.
- All Employees must maintain a drug and alcohol-free workplace in compliance with the substance abuse policy.
Security and Housekeeping:
- Ensure visitors and contractors follow the Contractor Management Policies / Site-specific Procedures.
- All Employees must use the designated employee entrance and exit doors. Under no circumstances can employees prop or cause to remain open any entrance or exit door that could permit entry to the facility for unauthorized individuals.
- All employees shall ensure the building is always clean and a safe workplace.
- No food or drink is permitted in the warehouse or production area, unless in a spill proof container. All other food and drink items must remain in the designated break areas.
