Na’atik Language and Culture Institute, winner of Go Abroad’s 2023 Innovative TEFL / Teach Abroad Program, is looking for English teachers to join our team for the 2024/25 school year. Working as part of an international team, our teachers lead classes and run extracurricular events for local and Indigenous students who receive subsidized and sponsored tuition. Our town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto is a small but close knit community, where you will be able to see the impact of your hard work and dedication. Purpose of Role: To teach high-quality English language through classes, our English language library, extracurricular activities and intercultural events to the people of Felipe Carrillo Puerto and its surrounding Maya communities to foster cross-cultural education and understanding. General Responsibilities
Plan and implement a regular schedule of small group English classes for students of all ages and levels ranging from beginner to advanced.
Work with the Na’atik librarian for library visits.
Work with Na’atik’s Spanish and Maya Immersion Program to deliver intercultural activities.
Assist in the planning and implementation of special extracurricular events and activities throughout the year.
Maintain good relations with students, their families, and all members of the Na’atik community.
Work in collaboration with other English teachers and other Na’atik staff members to achieve the mission of Na’atik.
Plan all lessons and develop materials and activities.
Conduct 14 age and level-appropriate classes, approximately 23 contact hours, per week.
Provide parents and students with quarterly assessments of student achievement.
Conduct regular assessments of student learning and use assessments to improve instruction and assist student learning.
Participate in all local promotions of the English Language Program.
Collaborate in the planning, preparation, and execution of Na’atik special events, including but not limited to Halloween, Primary Camp Day Teen Field Trip, and Year End Festival.
Plan and coordinate class parties for Christmas, Children’s Day, and other holidays throughout the year.
, Collaborate with the School Librarian and other staff members to facilitate library activities and regular circulation of library materials with Na’atik students.
Collaborate with the immersion Spanish and Maya (MaS) team to organize students for participation in intercultural activities.
Welcome and include MaS students to English classes to foster cross-cultural education and understanding.
Write and submit end-of-year handover notes to the Manager.
Work with the Manager for international PenPal project student participation.
Work with other members of the English Language Program to maintain an orderly work environment.
Attend all training, orientations, and professional development sessions.
Attend and participate in all required staff meetings.
Work with the Manager and Reception to monitor student attendance and retention.
Work with the Manager regarding student behavior and promote good citizenship among the student body.
Native English speaker or equivalent
Undergraduate degree from an accredited university
A TEFL/CELTA/TESOL teaching certification
1 year of classroom teaching experience
Willingness to help organize and participate in special events, activities and field trips
Communicative Spanish
Experience working in the developing world
Experience with development or nonprofit work
Local Salary ($13,175 MXN monthly before deductions)
Single occupancy apartment
Assistance with transitioning to local life with five days with a homestay family during orientation, including meals
Guided tour of Carrillo Puerto and paid orientation
Local cell phone SIMcard
Four weeks of paid vacation
Five hours of free, group classes or three hours of private Spanish or Maya classes with additional hours charged at cost
Assistance with visa paperwork
Reimbursement of visa costs upon completion of contract
