Job Information

The Senior Legislative Advisor is responsible for providing advice in the areas of legislation and departmental policies for the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI).

The Advisor works closely with Departmental divisions to provide advice on the development of legislation, policy and planning initiatives, and the varied legal issues related to departmental activities. Located in Yellowknife and reporting to the Manager of Legislation and Legal Affairs, the position will need to be familiar with the legal framework of case law, federal and territorial legislation, and the policies of the GNWT and the Department.

This position requires strong analytical skills with the ability to identify and explain key issues from complex documents and the ability to make decisions based upon the analysis of complex legal issues. Critical skills needed for this role include the ability to write persuasive documents explaining complex materials in a clear and concise manner, effectively lead a team through the legislative processes, and critically analyze and suggest an appropriate course of action within a limited timeframe. The role of the Advisor would need to demonstrate political sensitivity, co-ordination, communication and diplomacy in order to build and sustain relationships with others during complex negotiations. Skills needed include the ability to organize and prioritize while multitasking as well as manage stress while working under pressure.

Typically, the skills required for this role are obtained through an undergraduate degree in a related field and a degree program in law, as well as three years of experience working with law and legislation, experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of legislation, experience in writing and researching formal advisory and decision documents, and experience in providing complex advice and analysis to senior levels of government.

The incumbent must be eligible for membership in the Law Society of the Northwest Territories.

The salary range for this position is from $56.29 per hour to $67.23 per hour (approximately $109,766- $131,099.) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,700.
