About Our Opportunity

The province has been an innovative leader in creating information and programs to enable our communities to identify, understand, and plan for the impacts of flooding particularly in the face of how our changing climate changes affects our flood risks and impacts. The Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing (DMAH) has led the development of Flood Mapping Guidelines for Nova Scotia and the implementation of a province-wide flood mapping program so that communities can plan for flooding at a land use level.

We are looking for the right person to take the next step by preparing guidelines for stormwater management to help municipalities plan and adapt their infrastructure grounded with an understanding of land use interaction.

As the department responsible for regulating stormwater infrastructure, Environment and Climate Change has partnered with DMAH to create the project that this position will be responsible for: preparing stormwater management planning and design guidelines for municipalities, and then rolling out a funding program to municipalities to pilot and improve this guideline. Though it sits within the Water Resources Unit at Environment and Climate Change, this special project will build a collaborative team including staff at Municipal Affairs, and other teams within ECC.

This position is an opportunity to be at the forefront of the developing field of climate change adaptation. Storm events will be increasing in intensity and there will be minor and major systems that don’t have capacity to continue meeting their existing level of service. Nova Scotia needs a guideline that will bring together the best in green and grey approaches to stormwater management, lay out a path to impactful conversations, and jumpstart the knowledge already in communities to implement effective risk management and strategic climate change adaptation.

Join a dynamic and diverse team of passionate scientists, engineers and technicians whose work drives the protection and stewardship of our province’s water resources.

To ensure you are successful in this role, we are looking for an intermediate engineer with at least 6 years of experience related to stormwater design and or planning.

You’re someone who recognizes that this term role will provide you with the opportunity to explore working in a leadership position, make meaningful connections across the province, and understand the role of policy development in creating action around climate change and stormwater management. This position will showcase your technical and leadership abilities for more senior roles. If you are not currently a provincial employee, this term will open the door for you to be considered as an internal applicant for permanent positions in the public service.
