Job description

Your Opportunity:

The successful candidate will provide support to the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory. Primary duties will be at the RAH, but the successful applicant may be required to work at different sites within the Edmonton zone. The shifts in the department have various morning start times, working as late as 1800 hrs. Duties include but are not limited to: receiving, accessioning, handling of specimens, receipt and delivery of slides, preparing samples for processing, assisting staff who perform the gross dissection of surgical and biopsy specimens and participating in the various quality control processes within the work area. Also, performing equipment maintenance, packing, and shipping specimens, slides and blocks, for internal and external or off-site testing, are duties as well. As you will work within a team environment of MLA’s, MLTs, PAs, pathologists, residents and other learners, good interpersonal skills, effective time management and the ability to set priorities are necessary. The successful candidate must represent Laboratory Medicine and Pathology in a respectful, professional and courteous manner.

Description:

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Recent Anatomical Pathology experience is required. Successful demonstration of laboratory skills and data entry is required. Good interpersonal, time management, and prioritization skills are necessary. The candidate must have the ability to listen, comprehend and orally respond to or relay information, directions, or questions in person, over the phone, or in writing in an accurate and concise manner. The candidate must be adaptable and represent Zonal Laboratory Services in a respectful, professional and courteous manner.

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with LIS computer systems including Connect Care applications is an asset.
