DIRECTOR OF PLANNING

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The City of Maple Ridge is a vibrant and rapidly growing community dedicated to fostering sustainable development and enhancing the quality of life for our residents. With exciting projects on the horizon, we are seeking a skilled Director of Planning to lead and shape the future of our community.

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Director of Planning will lead the management and oversight of a dedicated group of professional and technical planning staff. Responsibilities will also encompass directing the development of key planning documents such as the Official Community Plan, policy development, improving long-term community plans and strategies, and development guidelines. Additionally, the Director of Planning will oversee the processing of various applications including rezoning, development permits, and subdivision requests. The role extends to managing the Environmental Affairs section within the department, ensuring a comprehensive approach to planning that balances rural and urban needs while fostering public engagement and consultation with Council, developers, consultants, and other key internal and external stakeholder groups.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE

A bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering or other related discipline plus a Master’s degree in Community or Regional Planning. In addition, demonstrated experience supervising and managing a professional and integrated team and current membership or eligibility for membership with the Canadian Institute of Planners. A valid BC driver’s license is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Extensive knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and techniques used in managing municipal physical, social and economic planning projects and operations.
• Thorough knowledge of the policies rules by-laws and regulations governing the work of the department.
• Ability to administer and direct departmental operations, programs and projects with a corporate strategic focus and provide a high degree of leadership.
• Ability to plan, coordinate and supervise the work of a moderate-sized group of professional, technical and support staff.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective liaison and working relationships with internal contacts, government agencies and representatives and the public.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and represent the department and the City in meeting and dealing with Boards, Committees and Commissions on planning matters and projects.
• Ability to prepare professional and technical planning and/or administrative reports and studies, and analyze and evaluate data for complex problem solutions.
