Job description

Founded in 2005, Value Partners Investments (VPI) is a Winnipeg-based investment firm that currently manages over $4.7 Billion in assets primarily through nine investment funds (the “Pools”) that are distributed through investment dealers and mutual fund dealers, as well as an investment counsel service which provides discretionary management services to high-net-worth focused financial planners and wealthy families across Canada.

Value Partners is currently registered as an investment fund manager, portfolio manager and exempt market dealer.

Reporting to the Portfolio Manager, the Research Analyst will assist in a variety of aspects related to the investment management of over $1.5 billion in assets across Pools and Mandates. This position provides an opportunity to pursue a career in investment management with substantial advancement opportunities, direct involvement in the portfolio management process, and a competitive salary and benefits package.

Key Responsibilities (Investment Funds)

Expectations:

1.    Help create wealth for clients of Value Partners Investments

2.    Create and update communication materials for the Investment Committee, Business Development Team, as well as internal and external Advisors
a.    Investment Committee Meetings
b.    Monthly and Quarterly Newsletters
c.    Buy/Sell Notifications
d.    Business Development materials requiring regular updates
e.    Advisor presentations for client events and meetings

3.    Measure the results of the companies we own quarterly
a.    Update the Portfolio Manager of the company earning results for the companies assigned and provide relevant earnings materials, such as earnings releases, earnings presentations, and any supplemental materials
i.    Provide pre-call update
ii.    Provide post-call update
iii.    Provide valuation model update versus past projections

4.    Regularly update models for tracking potential investment opportunities, Pool performance, economic activity, trading activity, and other materials as needed
5.    Assist in the voting of proxy materials
6.    Meet with sell-side analysts to gain a more profound understanding of the companies in the portfolios as well as potential investment opportunities
7.    Remain up to date on current events regarding companies, the markets and the economic environment
8.    Collaborate with the Business Development Team and ensure they have all the necessary materials they require to help create wealth for clients
9.    Other miscellaneous duties and special projects as assigned

More experienced candidates may also be required to perform the following tasks:

1.    Assist the Portfolio Manager in managing the Canadian Equity Pool/Mandate, VPI Income Pool, and VPIC Yield Mandate
a.    Help recommend new businesses for inclusion into the Pool/Mandates that meet all the VPI Investment Principles
•    Suggest the recommended target allocations for potential investments
•    Provide all the information that is necessary for the Portfolio Manager to make a well-informed decision based on the analyst’s opinion
•    Recommend potential opportunities for inclusion that meet all the VPI Investment Principles criteria and objectives of the Pool or Mandate
•    Provide any recommendations that were investigated in detail but not suitable for investment with the rationale for the analyst’s conclusion
b.    Help recommend trims or sells on existing positions within the Pool or Mandate
•    Suggest the recommended target allocations
•    Provide all the information that is necessary for the Portfolio Manager to make a well-informed decision based on the analyst’s opinion
2.    Improve Net Sales for the Pool/Mandates
a.    Create marketing materials for Portfolio Managers and Business Development team to communicate about:
•    Pools or Mandate
•    Create, gather, and produce materials that help Advisors explain to clients “What They Own and Why they Own It”
•    New concepts or messaging that can be helpful in communicating what we do and why we do it
b.    Have regular contact with Advisors to ensure they know we are working for them, and they have what they need
c.    Work towards and eventually help Advisors with client or prospect meetings
d.    Work towards and eventually host client events for Advisors
3.    Continue to create knowledge and credible disciples out of our Business Development Team by ensuring they understand
a.    Pool performance – absolute and relative to the benchmark and reasons for deviation
b.    Investment decisions
c.    Operating results of the businesses owned
d.    Stories about what we own and what we don’t own
4.    Assist with voiceovers for quarterly update videos
5.    Lead the Teams’ communications during the Investment Committee meetings
6.    Create new tools to help the Portfolio Manager make well-informed investment decisions
7.    Other miscellaneous duties and special projects as assigned

Education & Experience

•    Undergraduate Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, or a related discipline
•    1 - 2 years’ experience in an accounting or finance role
•    Completion of at least Level 1 of the CFA program
•    A combination of education and experience will be considered

Skills & Abilities:

• A passion for investing and following the markets
• Exceptional attention to detail, communication & writing ability, and organizational skills
• Advanced proficiency and working knowledge/experience with Microsoft Office products (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Proven analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to manage multiple tasks
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic, and often stressful environment
• Knowledge of the investment industry 

Nice-To-Have:

• Experience with S&P Capital IQ
• Experience with programming in Visual Basic
