As a Production & Retail Assistant, you help ensure that products are efficiently handled and well merchandised, that customers are served with speed and friendliness, and that your shop’s online presence reflects MCC BC values and priorities.

JOB SUMMARY

Working in MCC BC’s MCC Centre Thrift Shop, located in Abbotsford, BC, reporting to the Assistant General Manager and under the day-to-day supervision of the Processing & Retail Supervisor, the Production and Retail Assistant focuses primarily but not exclusively on specialized products and services, identifying, preparing and merchandising products suitable for display and purchase in MCC BC’s Threads boutique or other specialty areas. You provide general retail floor support to customers, including cash and customer service duties, and coordinate the shop’s online presence.

Working in the warehouse and on the retail floor, the Production and Retail Assistant collaborates with volunteers, colleague employees and shop leaders to create a compelling MCC BC Thrift experience. You’ll work directly with customers, volunteers, employees, donors and members of the community in a manner that reflects Christian integrity, exemplifying the beliefs, values, and mission of Mennonite Central Committee British Columbia in the workplace.

This role participates in devotional and prayer times at MCC BC and/or at local church and faith gatherings, being prepared to answer inquiries about MCC BC’s mission and values. This role contributes to a positive workplace culture based on Christian beliefs and values, while modelling nonviolent peacemaking in the workplace, in the community and the church through respectful interactions with others. This role requires adherence to MCC BC’s Code of Conduct, policies, practices, and procedures, including Workplace Health and Safety.

When you work: this role is scheduled some time during retail hours, from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm, Monday to Saturday. This role may require extended, after or holiday hours to support shop needs, issues or special organizational initiatives, as necessary.

Where you work: this position is located at MCC BC’s MCC Centre Thrift in Abbotsford, British Columbia. On occasion, training and meetings may require travel to other MCC BC locations within British Columbia.

How much you work: this is a full-time salaried position working a minimum of 40 hours per week. Supporting special organizational initiatives may require working extended, after or holiday hours, as necessary.

Physical conditions & requirements: this position requires spending a significant portion of time on one’s feet, handling used goods, and lifting/moving objects. It may also include up to 25% computer-monitor time.

Pace of work: this position requires working in a comfortable but fast-paced retail shop/shipping & receiving environment. You may be met with multiple demands at once from customers, volunteers and employees; responding positively and adroitly throughout.

Interactions with vulnerable populations: as a busy retail location, and following MCC BC safety and de-escalation protocols, this position may require occasional interactions with drug-addicted and street-involved persons, or individuals who are members of vulnerable populations.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & ACCREDITATIONS

• 1 year of relevant Thrift and/or retail experience, including cash handling experience
• Knowledge of the second-hand merchandise market & basic ability to assess quality of clothing, housewares, and furniture is an asset 
• Knowledge of social media platforms

JOB REQUIREMENTS & LICENSING

• Satisfactory criminal record check 
• Legally eligible to work in Canada

Key Responsibilities

INVENTORY MANAGEMENT & RETAILING

• Participate in inventory receiving, pre-sorting, sorting, repair/preparation, and movement onto the retail floor or for appropriate disposal, focusing primarily on (but not limited to) “Threads”, specialty and non-clothing items
• Maintain merchandise quality and price control, including researching competitive price points and developing and updating quality criteria, price lists, and merchandise rotation schedules
• Participate in inventory movement, stocking, placement, merchandising, curation and maintenance, focusing primarily on (but not limited to) creating and maintaining displays for “Threads”, specialty and non-clothing items to achieve MCC BC standards of tidiness, organization and optimal sales impact

CUSTOMER SERVICE & MARKETING

• Participate in service and assistance directly to customers and donors on the retail floor, at the Customer Service desk, and at check-out
• Participate in check out services and processes, including customer service and assistance, cash handling, till systems, balancing, and error handing
• Assist in resolving any conflicts arising with customers or volunteers in a manner that reflects MCC BC’s values for peaceful and respectful conflict resolution
• Support and participate in assessing and scheduling inventory pick-up and delivery, as required
• Coordinate the shop’s approved social media presence, including regular on-brand posts related to shop promotions, activities and community presence

TEAM PARTICIPATION

• Demonstrate MCC BC’s commitment to Christian mission, values, behaviours and approaches as defined in the qualifications, in all formal and informal interactions with any stakeholder
• Support volunteers and colleague employees, proactively and sensitively providing direct and advice as required
• Demonstrate active participation in team meetings, including morning devotions and prayers with volunteers and staff, leading as required

Base salary: $44557
