The salary range for this position is:
Recruitment range: $120,186 - $150,232 maximum starting salary is determined through knowledge, experience and internal equity.
Performance range: starting salary to max of $172,768 is available through annual performance increases.
An employee in this classification is excluded from the bargaining unit as defined in the Labour Relations Code

Job Summary
Mandate/Core Purpose of Role
The Corporate Privacy Officer and Director, Privacy and Access (CPO) plays a key role in enabling the university to meet its commitments in the realms of privacy and access through the development and implementation of policies, processes and systems for privacy management and training; ensuring compliance with privacy and access laws; the administration of requests for access to information about the university’s functions and to an individual’s own personal information; conducting privacy impact assessments; providing advice on privacy consults; managing and responding to privacy complaints, incidents and breaches; and the coordination of privacy, records management and personal information security programs and initiatives.
Objective
- Lead the Privacy and Access Office
- Provide timely, sound advice on privacy and access.
- Remain up to date on the latest developments in the field.
- Ensure compliance with applicable privacy and access laws.
- Lead the university’s privacy and access training programs.
- Lead the university’s response to privacy complaints, incidents and breaches.
Job Requirements
The qualifications for the position include:
- Extensive experience in implementing and operating a privacy and access to information program under the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, or similar legislation, preferably at a senior level in an organization of comparable size and complexity to the university. Experience in the post-secondary education environment would be an asset.
- Extensive knowledge of the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, or similar legislation and a good understanding of the principles of administrative and procedural fairness
- Significant experience in the application of privacy and access legal principles and provisions, leading sensitive and complex investigations, and the use of mediation and conflict resolution processes.
- Experience conducting or overseeing Freedom of Information Requests and Privacy Impact Assessments
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Management (e.g., Library or Archives), Business, or Law, or a related discipline. An equivalent combination of education, training or experience may be considered.
- Eligibility for Canadian Institute of Access and Privacy Professionals (CIAPP) Professional certification or other appropriate recognized professional association would be an asset.
- While not required, being eligible to practice law in BC, with a significant portion of practice dedicated to privacy and information access work, would be an asset.
- Recent experience supervising and leading a team of professionals would be an asset.

- Sound knowledge of and ability to analyze, research evaluate and interpret relevant privacy and access judicial and administrative decisions, and provincial and federal legislation applicable to the privacy and access functions of a university.
- Exemplary ability in writing and drafting documents, and in the preparation of correspondence, summaries, and reports.
- Demonstrated ability to engender trust and respect from others and build and maintain positive relationships with multiple stakeholders/clients under circumstances that may by sensitive.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing to a variety of audiences, including the ability to negotiate and persuade others.
- Excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and ability to interpret complex issues where considerable variation in interpretation is possible.
- Ability to establish clear expectations and provide effective guidance in adversarial situations.
- Ability to work under broad direction without formal guidelines or precedent, and with the necessary autonomy required by the role.
- Computer proficiency with a variety of relevant software applications.
