PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Leading direct report(s) to ensure compliance with all commodity tax laws (including GST/HST, QST, PST, fuel taxes, carbon taxes, excise taxes, and insurance premium taxes) with effective business process and in compliance with SOX controls
- Providing commodity tax advice to client departments on daily business transactions, including reviewing of related documentation and agreements
- Assisting in commodity tax audits including resolution of audit issues with government taxing authorities and assisting Director Commodity Tax in filing of appeals
- Assisting Director Commodity Tax in major projects and tax planning opportunities to optimize the company’s tax position that aligns with corporate strategy and direction
Candidates with less experience will be considered as Specialist, Commodity Tax and will have opportunities to expand knowledge bases in other commodity tax areas such as customs duties, U.S. sales and use taxes, U.S. fuel taxes as well as non-commodity tax areas such as withholding taxes.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Compliance and Recovery: Managing and continually improving Canadian commodity tax compliance process, recovery (e.g., refund) program, and related controls to ensure alignment with corporate requirement including SOX; Providing technical expertise and coaching to direct report(s) to achieve the highest standards of tax compliance and to develop staff tax knowledge
- Advisory: Advising client departments with respect to the company’s daily business through effective interpretation of legislation; Evaluating the tax impact of daily business transactions and making recommendations to maximize tax savings and to minimize tax exposure
- System: Assisting client departments to establish and validate system tax logic for business processes to enhance effective tax compliance
- Audit: Assisting in federal, provincial, and internal commodity tax audits to ensure timely completion, including replying audit queries, reviewing proposed assessments, preparing objection/appeal, resolving disputes, and implementing corrective action plans
- Development: Keeping current with new and proposed tax law changes and their impact on the company and assisting Director in establishing tax policy and procedures to ensure compliance
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Professional accounting designation with specialization in tax and completion of CPA Canada In-Depth GST and PST Courses or equivalent CRA training courses
- Strong Canadian commodity tax knowledge and minimum 10-year progressive experience in commodity tax compliance, rulings, refunds, audit, appeals, and statutory interpretation research (Candidates with very strong tax research skills or strong SAP or tax logic knowledge but with less experience will also be considered as Manager; Candidate with lesser experience will be considered as Specialist, Commodity Tax)
- Strong analytical and communication skills
- Passion for learning
- Strong knowledge of SAP and basic understanding of tax logic would be an asset

Management Conductor Program:
