Job description

Nature of the Work

The position of speech therapist encompasses, in particular, responsibility for carrying out prevention, screening and evaluation activities with students experiencing or likely to experience hearing, language, speech or voice problems and for determining and implementing a speech therapy or audiology treatment and intervention plan focussing on developing, restoring or maintaining communication skills of students in interaction with their environment and help them pursue their educational path

Main tasks and responsibilities 

He or she provides the following services for students with communication difficulties: identification, intervention, consultation, and in-servicing of in-school personnel, parents, volunteers, etc. Communication difficulties include difficulties involving speech (voice fluency, articulation) and language (receptive and expressive). 

He or she develops appropriate intervention programs for individual students or small groups of students, supports parents, teachers, other professionals and paraprofessionals in the implementation of the intervention programs.

He or she promotes preventative programs in the speech and language domain and creates or collaborates in the formation of special projects within the speech and language domain (I.e. language stimulation program, development of resource materials or training facilitators). 

He or she provides general information to parents, teachers and others who help students regarding speech and language techniques, materials and activities.

He or she works in collaboration with Education Consultants (special education) regarding communication programs in the special education classes, facilitates the obtaining of additional resources such as external services. 

He or she participates in multidisciplinary meetings as requested and organizes and presents workshops for principals, parents and other professionals.
