Supervisor, Custodial

Duties: Reporting to the Manager, Building Maintenance, the Supervisor, Custodial is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness and sanitation of facilities by providing support, supervision and leadership to the Custodial staff that work within the City facilities. Overseeing the Custodial Municipal Worker 1 & 2’s, this position is responsible for the: hiring and training of staff; ongoing performance management including coaching, mentoring and discipline (when required); addressing complaints and resolving problems as well as ensuring the Health, Safety and Wellness of all staff.
Supervision and Leadership - Manages the custodial services activities including training, procurement, and personnel management.
- Help to define, implement and evaluate services to the City. Analyzes workflow and workload trends and patterns to identify opportunities for improvement, resource allocation and cost benefit.
- Participates in emergency call-out as required.
- Ensuring sufficient coverage for vacation and sick time.
- Develops work schedules and coordinates workloads for custodians to ensure efficient services.
- Manages staff performance through employee appraisals, staff recognition, attendance management, current position descriptions, and develops performance.
- Engages Custodial staff in solving issues through problem management.
- Ensures staff have a clear understanding of their work responsibilities and expectations and how they impact the City of Lloydminster
- Visit facilities to monitor staff performance, communicate with staff in person and provide training.
- Works with Facility and Events staff to provide assistance for Special events.
- Ensure that cleaning equipment is maintained and in proper working order. Arranges for repairs as required. Carry out minor repairs if trained to do so.
- Create and maintain documentation on all equipment and activities. This includes maintenance manuals and Standard Work Processes.
- Manages inventory for custodial equipment, supplies and materials.
- Develops, implements, and maintains the quality standards required to maintain the cleanliness and safety in facilities.
- Test and evaluate new products for operational efficiencies and cost savings.
- Verifies invoices for payment, ensuring pricing, and quantity accuracy.
- Carries out regular cleanliness testing and quality inspections.
- Investigates requests and concerns regarding standards of cleanliness, sanitation and supplies.
- Coordinates refuse and recyclables collections.
Budget Management and Administration - Follows purchasing procedures that are compliant with the City of Lloydminster purchasing policy.
- Participates in departmental annual budget preparation to determine needs and ensures provision is included in departmental budget and business plan. Working with other facilities to ensure Custodial equipment is included in their budgets.
- Develop and manage service and supply contracts working with the Procurement department and Legislative Services
- Participates in annual goal setting and defines the resources required to achieve the goals.
Safety and Environment - Ensures that City policy, terms of the collective agreement, WCB regulations, WHIMIS, health regulations, and safety procedures are adhered to by all supervised staff.
- Contributes to an environment that fosters quality improvement and a culture of safety, dignity and respect for staff.
- Commits to continually improve health and safety performance through promotion of culture supporting hazard assessment and risk management.
- Ensures compliance documents are update to date, properly maintained, developed if necessary, and properly displayed when required.
- Carries out regular inspections of facilities to provide quality control, general conditions, code compliance, and maintenance requirements.
- Organizes and arranges staff, equipment and materials for the completion of custodial duties, events and functions in related facilities.
- Assists in investigating accidents and completing forms relating to WCB claims
Other - Other related duties as required that are within the area of knowledge and skills required by the job description.
Schedule:
Normal working hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., however there may be the occasional requirement to work outside of these standard hours.
Qualifications: - Successful completion of post-secondary education in related field with a minimum of five years’ experience working in a custodial setting with at least two years of previous supervisory experience.
- A certification or designation from a recognized institution in Building Maintenance would be considered an asset.
- Formal training in personnel practices such as: Human Resources Management, Effective Supervision and Effective Communication or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Demonstrated team player approach; ability to create an effective working environment for cohesion and staff retention.
- Ability to effectively communicate professionally with contractors, vendors, City employees and direct reports.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong computer skills in areas such as Microsoft Suite including: Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Publisher, GP and Pearl are essential.
- Strong interpersonal skills that allow for the development of collegial working relationships at various levels both internally and externally; ability to resolve concerns or complaints.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Vehicle Operator’s License (registered in Alberta or Saskatchewan) with a clear driving record.
Pre-Employment Requirements: - Satisfactory Criminal Record Check. and RCMP reliability security clearance.
