About Our Opportunity

The Natural Sciences Library and the Central Registry of the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables requires a library/records management assistant for the summer of 2024. You will answer to the Director of Corporate Management Services and work closely with the supervisors and staff of both the Natural Sciences Library and the Central Registry. 

The Natural Library has a large collection of historical and geological maps, historical aerial photos and government reports which need to be inventoried. This involves gathering data such as available format, storage locations, number of copies, as well as some bibliographic data. These will be recorded in a spreadsheet with the intention of the being transferred to a professional database. Other tasks such as digitizing reports and maps and assisting with reference questions may be assigned. 

The Central Registry requires that you accurately enter data into the records management system, FileNet, and Access. Classify records according to the approved records retention schedule. Inventory and prepare records for off-site storage and the provincial archives. Search and retrieve files for departmental staff and return files to the system upon return.  

Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you must be returning to an information management related program (e.g. MI, MLIS, or LIT) fulltime in the fall of 2024. A cover letter must be submitted with the application. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet applications is required. 

You must be a self-starter who is able to work with minimal supervision, and you are detail oriented. You should have good writing and communication skills. 

You must be able to lift boxes of documents weighing up to 22 kg. 

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

This position is based in Halifax, NS and the dates for this opportunity will be from May 6, 2024 to August 30, 2024.

 

Pay Grade:HOURLY 

Salary Range: $17.34 - $28.26 Hourly
