Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre, University of Toronto Mississauga– Writing Instructor
Nature of the assignment : The Writing Instructors at the Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre counsel students individually and in small groups on university writing, especially on organization, reasoning, style, and language use.
Assignment description : Instructors will see students with writing assignments from a variety of disciplines. Instructors may also be asked to deliver group instruction on general writing skills.
Estimated number of positions available : 2
Hours of Work (per position) : 60 to 100 hours – subject to change
Schedule Information : A mix of in-person and synchronous hours from Monday to Friday from 9am –5pm. A limited number of asynchronous hours may be available. Synchronous and asynchronous appointments will be conducted online using the WCONLINE platform. Paid training on synchronous and/or asynchronous writing instruction is mandatory for all Writing Instructors who have not received training in the past four months and will be held in the first two weeks of May.
Sessional Dates of Appointment : 1 May 2024 – 30 August 2024 (Summer semester)
Salary :
$51.85/hour (Writing Instructor 1)
$55.75/hour (Writing Instructor 2)
$57.39/hour (Writing Instructor 2 – Priority)
All positions are subject to budgetary approval. Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
Minimum Qualifications : A Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Applied Linguistics, Communication, English, Education) with strong writing and oral communication skills. A demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team. Flexible availability is a requirement for these positions.
Preferred Qualifications : Include a Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline (as above), relevant experience teaching writing one-on-one or teaching university courses with a writing component. Previous experience in a writing center and training and experience in second-language instruction at the university level preferred. Experience with writing for science also an asset.
Description of duties : Instructors will meet with students, in-person, online synchronized/asynchronized or during drop-in sessions to support students with writing assignments for a variety of disciplines.
