Location: 1 Jim Flaherty St., Whitby, ON
Assignment: 8 weeks (37.5 hours/week)
Pay Rate: $17.50/hour
Start Date: June 24, 2024

The Position: Reporting to the Supervisor team of the Therapeutic Recreation department, the Therapeutic Recreation Assistant (TRA) is responsible for preparation and implementation of a variety of recreational programs for individuals with and without disabilities. The Therapeutic Recreation Assistant (TRA) will work with Therapeutic Recreation Specialists to educate individuals and facilitate programs/activities that improve and enhance their overall health, connect with their community, and improve well-being and quality of life through meaningful recreation and leisure activities.
Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) Eligibility: - Between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
- Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment*;
- Valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and legally entitled to work in Canada.
- International students are not eligible. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible. As the objective of the Canada Summer Jobs program is to support youth entering the Canadian labour market, the temporary nature of an international student’s time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labour market.
Main Responsibilities: - Assist the TR team with the planning and facilitation of Therapeutic Recreation in Summer
- Assist Therapeutic Recreation Management Team in communication with families in program
- Knowledge of program planning and facilitation techniques
- Use a variety of therapeutic tools and techniques that focus on and promote inclusion in all activities to meet the changing needs and abilities of individuals
- Participate in daily de-briefs with team to discuss challenges, concerns and successes of program
- Document and inform Leadership team of any changes or incidents
- Ensure a safe, healthy, inclusive, and positive environment for all participants, staff, and volunteers while engaged in Therapeutic Recreation in Summer.
- Familiar with and desire/passion to work with youth and adults with disabilities
- Work with the Leadership team to collect and provide feedback on programs and maintain attendance lists
- Establish rapport and maintain effective relationships with TR team, Abilities Centre members, support workers, EAs, participant parents, volunteers and community partners
- Manage and maintain program equipment and supplies

- Inspire confidence, resilience, and self-esteem in program participants through respect, acceptance, and focus on strengths and achievements
- Foster a work environment that values and encourages teamwork and empowerment
- Must have a passion for recreation and leisure pursuits, valuing the positive benefits recreation has on ones overall health and wellbeing
- Interest in developing effective planning and facilitation skills, organization and time management skills, and able to work independently without close supervision
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
Qualifications: - Diploma/Degree Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation and Leisure services or related field (completed or currently enrolled)
- Required: Current, clear criminal record check for the vulnerable sector
- Demonstrated passion for fostering inclusion
- First Aid / CPR certification an asset
- Previous Safe Management training an asset
- Knowledge of inclusion, accessibility, and accommodation an asset
- Proficient in use of Microsoft Office products
- Ability to work with potentially challenging participants
