Prof. Scott Chapman invites applications for an engineer and research scientist position at the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of British Columbia supporting the Gemini Infra-Red Multi-Object Spectrograph (GIRMOS) instrument for the Gemini-north telescope.
The successful candidate will play a leading role in the design and build phases of the GIRMOS instrument, focused on the multi-object adaptive optics system. The candidate will also be expected to take a leading role in the GIRMOS Scientific Collaboration. Qualified candidates will have strong background in many aspects of engineering and instrumentation development in astronomy, with an expertise in adaptive optics, and a strong record of development specifically for multi-object adaptive optics and open loop control, as well as familiarity with computing and system administration. The hiring team views the following as assets but not requirements: experience and interest in astronomical data analysis and software development; a proven ability to lead projects within a collaboration; a PhD or equivalent degree in a related field. The position will be based from UBC, with a majority of time spent at the GIRMOS-MOAO lab in Victoria.
The successful applicant will devote half of their time to GIRMOS development, 30% to the REVOLT-GOLD open loop experiment designed to retire risk in GIRMOS, and spend 20% on other research directions in collaborator with Prof. Chapman. They will work closely with national and international collaborators co-developing these instruments through virtual meetings and communications.
The successful applicant will be embedded with the UBC GIRMOS group (PI Prof. Scott Chapman and team) working on the Critical Design Review phase of GIRMOS, the subsequent build, integration, and testing phases of GIRMOS, and the REVOLT-GOLD open loop adaptive optics experiment on the DAO 1.2m telescope.
The University of British Columbia is located in beautiful Vancouver, Canada. Campus is a roughly five hour trip by car and ferry to Victoria where the GIRMOS labs are located at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory (DAO). UBC is home to strong efforts in astrophysics, observational astronomy, and data science.

The position will ideally start before the end of the calendar year. This is a three-year position with the possibility of renewal, with a competitive annual salary of $70,000-86,000 CAD, depending on experience.
