An exciting opportunity is available for an Engineering Discipline Manager to join our Automation Team working out of our Hamilton, Ontario office.
The Automation Discipline Manager will be responsible for managing a team of Engineers, Designers and Controls Specialists providing Instrumentation and Controls, and Process Automation Engineering services to our Heavy Industrial and Chemical customers throughout North America.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day activities, goal setting, performance management, and professional development of the team.
- Accountable for the development of the group by actively providing and overseeing mentoring, coaching, and ongoing training.
- Build and maintain control system engineering capabilities in all facets of system design including:
- High Level Software and System Development
- Distributed Control system hardware and software development
- HMI and PLC System hardware and software development
- Historian database management
- Network/Internet implementation and integration
- Control panel construction and installation
- Safety Instrumented Systems
- Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)
- Commissioning and start-up
- Accountable for the successful execution of Automation engineering services on all assigned projects.
- Establish and maintain mentoring practice for new engineering/design graduates and ensure that new graduates are trained and have professional development plans in place.
- Support projects by bringing high level of experience to guide team and help provide solution strategies where required.
- Monitor project execution with respect to discipline technical and quality standards, budgets, and schedules.
- Proactively manage team resources ensuring sufficient staffing levels and skillsets to support ongoing projects and maintain utilization targets.
- Establish and maintain competitive engineering estimating practices.
- Work collaboratively with Business Development (BD) group to identify, establish, and develop team capabilities and skillsets to support customer needs and BD strategies.
- Actively support the development of new Automation business opportunities with the BD Team.
- Establish and maintain programing, engineering, design, and calculation standards.
- Participate in establishing milestone dates for project deliverables and tasks in cooperation with the Project Manager/Engineering Manager.
- Participate in reviewing discipline quotes and scope changes as applicable.
- Cooperate with the Project Manager or project owner to ensure that milestone dates, approval criteria, schedules, engineering standards, client-supplied timelines and processes are met.
- Assist Human Resources with the overall responsibility of personnel management including but not limited to: recruitment and selection processes; new employee on-boarding; performance reviews; training plans; total compensation discussions; internal communications; wage classification discussions; policy discussions; terminations; early and safe return to work (ESRTW), disciplinary process; ergonomics; safety; incident investigation.
- Maintain an understanding and ensure the application of all technical standards, regulations, and code requirements governing the team’s scope of work.
- Ensure that the team follows all JNE Health and Safety/personal protective equipment (PPE) policies.
Qualifications, Skills & Education
- P.Eng. required.
- 10+ years Automation Engineering Technical experience required.
- 5+ years previous managerial experience in a related field required.
- Enhanced understanding of Industrial Automation Systems.
- Excellent knowledge of Rockwell and Siemens systems.
- Understanding of engineering design and construction principles.
- Ability to successfully supervise, lead, and manage teams of people and multiple projects.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to motivate, coach, and develop team members.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
