The Ottawa Citizen/Sun is creating a new position to help lead digital innovation in our historic news brand.

We publish real-time breaking news, we curate newsletters that bring your interests right to your inbox, we share long reads that you can sit down with a warm beverage and get lost in. We host live events and experiences that bring our readers closer to the story. We are a multi-platform news source with websites, apps, video and social media channels and emerging platforms.

We’re also keenly interested in finding new and better ways to serve our readers. Most importantly, we’re dedicated to providing our audience with smart news, opinion and analysis that challenges Ottawa to become an inspiring national capital city. 

The digital news editor will lead a team of online editors and reporters, working closely with senior management to help oversee a transformation in the way the newspaper creates and publishes content.

What you’ll do: 

• Lead the newsroom’s online team in daily publishing
• Work with the breaking news editor on real-time news and SEO strategy
• Collaborate with senior management on strategy tied to platforms, including registration, reader engagement, social media and newsletters 
• Improve existing workflows and train team members on new ways to produce and share digital content
• Take ownership of readership analytics and readership growth goals
• Participate in daily editorial meetings to share insights and drive change
• Expand production across multiple platforms and formats
• Have opportunities to pitch, edit and write stories 
• Support and launch ambitious projects that will build the Citizen’s community profile

Who you are:

• A champion of digital storytelling who makes decisions based on a mix of what audiences tell you through analytics and good old-fashioned news judgment 
• Someone up to date with emerging trends in digital media. You’re good at taking ideas and figuring out how to make them happen 
• A multi-skilled media producer who can dabble in data analytics, put SEO strategies into place, oversee video production and experiment with subscriber-only initiatives
• A journalist with a proven track record for creative, out of the ordinary storytelling 
• A collaborative leader, who can work under pressure, hit deadlines and inspire change within a legacy organization
• Have a degree in journalism or digital media production
• 5 years' experience working in a news or publishing environment
• Extensive experience with at least one of the following: video production, data visualization, visual storytelling, SEO, or newsletter production
• Bilingualism is an asset
