About Us

 

The Nova Scotia Emergency Management Office works in collaboration with Nova Scotian Municipalities, other federal and provincial departments, and critical infrastructure partners to strengthen emergency preparedness through planning, training, and exercising. The Emergency Management Office is responsible for the prevention/mitigation of, preparedness for, response to, and recovery from, emergencies affecting the Province of Nova Scotia. 

About Our Opportunity

 

We’re hiring a Senior Planning Officer who is passionate about shaping the future of policy impacting Emergency Management in Nova Scotia.

 

As the Senior Planning Officer, you will develop, implement, and evaluate emergency management policies. You will lead the evaluation and recommendations around emergency management policies for municipalities. You will make effective recommendations with a focus on strategic decision-making. You will lead a variety of complex policy projects impacting emergency management in Nova Scotia.

 

This position involves a large amount of writing and requires an exceptional ability to produce accurate, well-composed materials under tight timelines.

Qualifications and Experience

 

You’ve completed an undergraduate degree combined with six (6) years of related experience in communications, policy analysis, strategic planning, and project management or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

 

This position requires exceptional leadership abilities as well as in-depth knowledge of research methods, and analytical and organizational skills. Your ability to coordinate multi-disciplinary teams is essential as you engage in consultation with internal and external partners. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are vital, along with presentation skills. You must be proficient with Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Skills in consultation, team building, and process facilitation are critical. You will be well-organized, and capable of managing change and competing priorities under tight deadlines.

 

A graduate degree in a relevant field, experience with government policy and planning, and project management certification are highly desirable assets.

 

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

 

This role is in a fast-paced decision-making environment. You may be working at your computer for extended periods of time.

 

You must have a valid drivers license and immediate access to reliable transportation, as required.

 

Your normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day, approximately 0830-1630.

 

You must be available to participate in the on-call Duty Officer stand-by rotation, and available to report for extended hours at the NSEMO Provincial Coordination Center in Dartmouth in the event of provincial emergencies.

What We Offer

 

 

Pay Grade: PR 17  

Salary Range:  $3,091.70 - $3,631.17 Bi-Weekly
