Effective January 1st, 2024 the salary range for this position is $29.46 to $31.96 per hour in compliance with OPSEU Correctional Bargaining Unit collective agreement provisions. The new rates, effective retroactive to January 1, 2024, were recently confirmed and dates for implementation of the new salary rates are still to be determined.

Do you have carpentry skills with an eye for detail? Do you have general knowledge of maintenance and trades? If so, consider this exciting position with the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre. In this role, you will perform journeyman carpentry services in the general upkeep, installation and renovation of carpentry services.

NOTE: This is an onsite position also requires the availability to work evenings and on weekends, and flexibility to work extra hours as required. Salary Note: K-1 Custodial Responsibility Allowance applicable.

What can I expect to do in this role?
In this position, you will:
• Build, modify and replace structures mainly made of wood, such as partitions, cupboards, doors, floor underlay, scaffolding.
• Repair and maintain structures including patching roofs, repairing window frames, furniture and door hardware.
• Discuss projects with supervisor to determine needs in accordance with government codes and by-laws, planning and laying out work, referring to blueprints and diagrams, preparing own sketches, estimating labour and supplies for approval, purchasing/requisitioning supplies, and keeping records of supplies used, liaising with Infrastructure Ontario (IO) regarding repairs/renovations.
• Perform a wide variety of maintenance, construction and upkeep duties such as locksmithing, masonry, plumbing, preparing surfaces and applying paint, routine servicing of heating, water and sewage systems.
• Perform regular preventative maintenance tests and checks on equipment.
• Assist skilled tradespersons in installing, relocating, replacing and repairing equipment.
• Supervise and instructing selected offender helpers including writing behaviour reports, assigning duties, and ensuring safety and security of work area. How do I qualify?
Mandatory
• You have a Class G Ontario Drivers Licence
• You have obtained certification as a Carpenter by the designated ministry of Ontario government or have relevant work experience Technical Knowledge:
• You are aware of the relevant legislation, e.g., Occupational health and safety act, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, by-laws and codes to ensure safety and integrity of structures/installations and to aid in determining work methods.
•You are aware of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and institutional security practices/procedures to ensure compliance with standards, proper equipment operation/utilization and to maintain the safety and security of the work area and offender helpers. Carpentry and Maintenance Experience:
• You have proven carpentry knowledge to determine the methods of building, altering and replacing structures and maintaining and repairing carpentry installations.
• You can interpret and follow blueprints, sketches and plans in order to ensure the proper layout and measurements of structures.
• You have experience using carpentry techniques such as wood sawing, cutting, sanding, planing, joining, dove-tailing, turning, gluing.
• You have knowledge of estimating labour and material requirements to build, modify and replace structures such as doors and partitions.
• You are familiar with trades involved in minor building repairs, such as electrical work, plumbing.
• You are aware of general knowledge of other construction trades such as plumbing and masonry to perform routine maintenance, construction and upkeep duties.
•You have knowledge of institution purchasing procedures. Analytical Skills:
• You can determine the correct tools, materials and methods of building, maintaining and repairing structures and items and carpentry.
• You can estimate labour and material requirements to build, modify and replace structures.
• You have experience reviewing equipment, material and supply inventories of the program area to ensure the maintenance of hand and power tools.
• You have evaluative skills to assess when/if structures and accessories should be replaced or repaired. Organizational Skills:
• You have planning and organizational skills to plan and organize duties performed.
• You have communication skills to discuss/recommend repairs to management and prepare sketches and plans for approval regarding replacement of structures and methods of construction.
