Job description

The Animal Health Care Assistant reports to the Director and helps with the care and rehabilitation of wildlife at our busy clinic. The candidate will work alongside volunteers and staff, ensuring a high level of care for wildlife patients while adhering to strict protocols and regulations.

Salthaven West is a charitable wildlife rehabilitation centre located in Regina that provides care to sick, injured, displaced, and orphaned wildlife across southern Saskatchewan. Salthaven West admits over 1,400 wild birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians each year. Our goal is to release healthy wildlife back into their natural environments and educate communities on how to coexist with wildlife.

Duties and Responsibilities
Assist with wildlife admissions, physical exams, and assessments of the patients.
Prepare food and feed the patients as required based on species specific diets.
Set up, take down, clean, and disinfect animal enclosures as well as provide proper enrichment.
Help maintain the cleanliness of the clinic and equipment, including dishes, sweeping, and laundry.
Lift and carry items up to 40lbs including garbage and recycling.
Accurate record-keeping and observation of animal behavior including maintaining patient charts.
Assist staff with rescues, supply pick ups, and patient transfers.
Completing additional duties as requested.

Qualifications:
In accordance with the regulations set out by Canada Summer Jobs, the successful candidates must be between 18-30 years of age at the time of the start date.
Previous wildlife experience and/or handling, or knowledge of natural history would be an asset.
Effective communication with team members, volunteers, and the public is crucial.
