Located within the Division of Student Affairs, Assessment and Exam Services (AES) administers VIU's accommodated exam services and pre-program admission assessments. Workload
35 hours per week for 39 weeks per year. 0 hours per week for 13 weeks. Incumbent will be on seasonal break from the 3rd week of May to the 3rd week of August. Seasonal break dates confirmed annually.
Pay Level
VIUFA F1: $53,729 - $85,390 per annum (prorated if part-time).
Starting Salary
Technicians are placed on the F1 salary scale based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement, to an initial maximum of $72,334 per annum .
Start:
April 1st, 2024 to May 24, 2024. Restarting August 26th, 2024 to May 23, 2025.

Duties:
Reporting to the Director of Student Services, the Exam Specialist works collaboratively to implement and support internal exam accommodation services including exam accommodation support for students with disabilities, entrance assessment activities, and administration of exams for other educational, governmental, and professional organizations across VIU campuses.
Specific responsibilities for this position are detailed below.
Accommodated Exam Administration Functions
- Collaborates with Access Specialist in Accessibility Services in the appropriate facilitation of student accommodations; coordinates and acts as in-scope supervisors for exam invigilators, organizes room allocation.
- Liaises with administrators, program coordinators, instructors and staff on issues impacting AES student services and resources to maintain, implement and provide AES services.
- Communicates routine and non-routine inquiries related to accommodated exam requests.
- Sets up assistive technology and provides training to students in the use of specialized software used in accommodated exams (e.g: Kurzweil, Dragon, Read & Write); maintains technical aids, assistive technology inventory used for exams, tracks and maintains records.
Essential Assessment Functions
- Responds to queries and provides pertinent information regarding testing procedures; facilitates institutional admissions tests as directed; provides assessment review materials for on-line access to prospective students; familiarizes prospective students and community with AES services.
- Tracks, analyzes and reports assessment results informing program success; provides support and refers as appropriate to students who are unsuccessful in fulfilling testing requirements.
- Reviews test instruments in conjunction with the Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning; develops new tests and investigates new technologies and/or methods for testing that is appropriate, professional, up to date and meets program requirements.
- Collaborates with local school district Career and Technical Education Coordinators to inform and meet VIU and school district partnership agreements; develops information and provides direction and documentation in collaboration with Assessment Services, Student Services and Admissions at Cowichan and tiwsemawtxw campuses to ensure campus wide consistency.
External Activity Functions
- Liaises with external testing organizations and educational institutions when directed and where applicable.
General Functions
- Provide in-scope supervision to CUPE exam invigilators; participate in the hiring and training of invigilators; maintains a climate of inclusion, respect and cooperation; refer to professionals as appropriate.
Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities, including, student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a related field (education, disability access or related discipline from an appropriately accredited institution).
- Proven track record of applying technology or developing new technological solutions to improve outcomes of processes or project-based work.
- Demonstrated leadership, communication and organizational skills and ability to work effectively and sensitively with diverse populations.
- Ability to switch between detailed tasks quickly, exercise sound judgment when faced with issues beyond the scope of this role while maintaining a professional attitude under pressure.
- Demonstrated intermediate level of proficiency in computer-based testing software, MS Office applications and Excel, including proficiency with troubleshooting IT systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in an educational support role, preferably with adult learners.
- Familiarity with student record data bases and computer-based testing software.
- Experience working with individuals with a variety of disabilities.
- Knowledge of and experience with current assistive technology.
- Familiarity with BC post-secondary systems and experience in a college, institute and/or university environment. Knowledge of exam accommodations and university academic environment.
