Job description

The Alberta Securities Commission is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators, the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.

The Enforcement division enforces Alberta securities laws by investigating and prosecuting breaches of those laws with a view to stopping current misconduct and preventing future misconduct.

Reporting to the Manager, Investigations, the Investigative Analyst will support a team of investigators by collecting and analyzing financial records and information from a variety of financial sources. This individual will track the flow of money and identify relationships and patterns in an investigation. In addition, they will create efficiencies and streamline processes by utilizing and recommending technology and automation to gather, analyze, and visualize large amounts of financial records, transactions and information.

• Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting business and bank records/transactions from various financial sources to compose summary reports using advanced Excel to interpret and present data illustrating linkages, patterns, and anomalies.
• Leveraging technology to present and visualize complicated and novel financial data, such as foreign exchange trading in an organized format.
• Leading the development of strategies for gathering and analyzing business, bank and financial records to streamline processes and create efficiencies.
• Identifying the extraction of data from internal and external databases, and managing data quality and risks.
• Developing and recommending automated processes to gather, organize and interpret large, complex, multi-dimensional datasets reducing manual tasks and narrowing the scope of documents to review.
• Building effective tools and techniques to clean and transform datasets to facilitate their use in investigative analysis.
• Developing meaningful data visualizations, Excel spreadsheets, i2 charts, graphical aids, etc. to represent money flow between related parties and represent associations to various stakeholders .
• Providing evidence as a key ASC staff witness during administrative and court proceedings.

• Advanced knowledge in Excel relating to the collection, aggregation, and analysis of large amounts of data.
• A minimum of three years of data analysis experience.
• A total of four years or more of experience working in an analyst or related capacity in a professional organization.
• Financial and/or investment industry experience would be highly beneficial.
• Proficiency with at least one data analytics tool such as SQL, R and Python to manipulate and analyze data efficiently.
• Experience with Tableau or PowerBI or related tools for analysis, visualization, and reporting
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, incorporating attention to detail and the ability to think critically and manage multiple projects and priorities.
• The proven ability to learn and apply new technology.
• The ability to work in a team and independently with minimal supervision.
