Overview
The Manager, Operations & Maintenance is responsible for the safety, financial, asset and project management, people leadership and operations of the Waterfront Training Centre (WTC).
Responsibilities
Waterfront Training Centre Operations & Maintenance
- Ensure trainees have a safe place to learn. Including: leading by example, correcting unsafe behaviours and scenarios, documenting and following up on corrective actions, using the FLRA for unique situations, PM’s are updated, engage in preventative maintenance activities, and WTC staff are adequately trained and equipped to handle major incidents and drug & alcohol investigations.
- Financial oversight and planning: Map out the anticipated spending for each month synchronized with maintenance schedules and Quarterly Training Plan activities.
- Maximize classroom utilization, monitoring and addressing machine utilization to proactively plan for procurement, purchasing and expansion decisions.
- Oversee the Daily Operating Report and respond to issues proactively
- Facilitate machine simulation and training in collaboration with the Workforce Safety Committee to provide the training expertise, necessary machines, develop the worksites, consider safety implications and budget, and project timelines.
- Collaborate with various management levels and own day-to-day and project management for WTC operations.
- Liaise with BCMEA’s members and maintenance members to benchmark maintenance activities and understand member needs of the site.
- Monitor the equipment preventive maintenance program to follow regulations.
- Ensure all staff and trainers are conducting themselves in a safe and professional manner.
- Identify old equipment and make recommendations for purchasing and selling of equipment.
- Develop capital and operating budget proposal and maintain approved budget.
- Acquire quotes, purchasing and maintain stock of parts, tools and supplies for the WTC maintenance workers.
- Responsible for the engagement of three direct reports through mentoring and coaching.
- Project leader for any major equipment procurement and/or installation.
- Coordinate the annual inspections for all cranes, fall protection equipment, etc.
- Bring and keep the WTC up to CLC and COHS regulations standards.
- Track and authorize invoices and payroll.
- Hold the role of Fire Marshall and Emergency Warden.
- Responsible to ensure a clean and organized site for Terminal, Shipping and Port Operators who tour the site.
- Facilitate tours and directly responsible for the group’s safety, concerns and questions.
Co-Chair Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC)
- Facilitate the JHSC meetings including all minutes and paperwork.
- Ensure that the WTC is following all codes and policies.
- Update and distribute minutes.
- Site inspections and address any concerns.
- Produce and distribute proposed agenda.
- Maintain a respectful and productive environment as co-chair.
Qualifications
- 3-5 years in Operations Management with experience managing and leading direct reports and taking full responsibility of a site.
- Education experience in Engineering (ideally electrical or mechanical), or Trades (Electrical, and Heavy Duty Mechanic preferred), other certifications like thee CRSP and CRL are highly valued as well.
- Experience leading the development and compliance to Hazard Prevention Programs, Preventative Maintenance Programs, and Hazardous Energy Isolation and Control programs.
- Experience and comfort navigating complex unionized environments.
- Strong people leadership skills to bring the best out of your team.
- High proficiency in developing and adhering to capital and operating budgets (~2M).
