Job description

We’re hiring two Police and Court Support Advocates to join our clinical services team!

This is a full-time position under the direct supervision of the Police and Court Support (PACS) Team Lead, Clinical Director of Child and Youth Services, and the Director of Client Care Services.

The Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton (SACE) is a not-for-profit, charitable organization that supports children, youths, and adults who have experienced sexual abuse or assault, and educates the public about sexual violence. All work at SACE will reflect the Mission Statement and philosophical beliefs of the organization.

The current operational hours in the Police and Court Support (PACS) Program are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. Flexibility to work weekday evenings and weekends is a requirement. The expected caseload for this position may need to decrease occasionally depending on the circumstances and workload.

Responsibilities include:

• Client Supports :
  • Telephone, email, virtual, and in-person supports: 
    • Assessment of client needs ; 
    • Ongoing emotional support, advocacy, and information about Victim’s Rights; 
    • Information gathering and case updates;
      • Liaise with relevant parties (crown and police, etc.);
    • Assist with Emergency Protection Orders and Restraining Orders; 
    • Sexual Violence Reporting (review of options); 
      • Police accompaniment;
    • Court preparation; 
      • Review of legal processes with client (beginning with police engagement through to testimony) what to expect, role of client, etc.; 
    • Crown accompaniment; 
    • Court accompaniment; 
    • Short-term post-court support; 

• Case Management:
  • Case notes, documentation of collateral contact (crown, police, etc.); 
  • Information gathering and resourcing on behalf of client; 

• Collaborative Work: 
  • Consultations as required; 
  • Participate in Edmonton Police Service (EPS) File Reviews as appropriate and directed; 
  • Attend staff meetings, departmental meetings, and staff in-services and remain ingrained on current literature and direction (e.g. restorative justice), and where appropriate, adapt crisis intervention skills to reflect changes as determined by the Clinical Director of Child and Youth Services and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO); 
• Other appropriate duties as assigned by the PACS Team Lead, the Director of Client Care Services, or the Director of Clinical Services. 

Minimum required qualifications:

• A degree in humanities, social and human services, or criminal justice is preferred, but equivalent experience will be considered;
• 2 to 3 years related work experience in crisis intervention and support;
• Ability to work with the effects of sexual violence on individuals and communities;
• The ability to work and build relationships with various community and professional services;
• Reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license.

The Ideal Candidate:

• Is familiar with the issue of sexualized violence and with feminist approaches to support and violence prevention.
• Is familiar with anti-oppression principles and practices.
• Is able to work with and develop relationships with a wide range of people, both within and outside of the organization, in collaborative, consultative, and/or support capacities;
• Is a motivated individual with excellent project and time management skills;
• An understanding of the criminal justice system and experience in database management and program evaluation is an asset.

Interview dates: Tuesday, April 9 and Tuesday, April 16, 2024 (if necessary). Interviewees will be contacted via email to schedule a 30-minute phone interview and to book an interview time for these dates.

Support and Information Line training dates

: The successful candidate will be asked to attend the SACE Support and Information Line training on Tuesday and Thursday evenings

(6 to 9 p.m.), and some Saturdays (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.), in between and Tuesday, June 25. Staff will be compensated for these training hours with time off in lieu (TOIL).  

Position start date: End of April 2024, likely April 29.
