Job description

Your Opportunity:

Working within the laboratory team at the Grey Nuns Hospital, the Laboratory Assistant I is responsible for performing all aspects of the pre-analytical path of workflow including phlebotomy, collections by heel or finger poke, data entry, specimen processing, specimen distribution and preparation for transport

Description:

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Equivalency is defined as completion of a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) and/or Combined Laboratory and Xray Technologist (CLXT) program in Canada; completion of a Medical Lab Technician/Technologist program outside of Canada; and/or MLT or CLXT students who have completed their phlebotomy training/rotation. Applicants with a high school diploma may be considered. Upon hire, you will be required to complete on-the-job phlebotomy training provided by APL at no cost, and formal training courses offered by SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) or NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology). The costs associated with these formal training courses will be your responsibility. You will be required to complete these training requirements within your probationary period, as per the Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) collective agreement.

Preferred Qualifications:

You have excellent communication skills, with the ability to relate information to appropriate personnel in an accurate, clear, and concise manner. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, working independently and/or in a team environment. Recent phlebotomy experience, for both adults and pediatrics in an acute care environment. Recent experience with EPIC LIS. Formal urinalysis training course required or current equivalent experience.
