Legal Aid NL is currently seeking a Senior Accountant (Permanent) to fill an immediate need in the Provincial Director’s Office located in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Reporting to the Finance Manager the ideal candidate will be highly organized, self-motivated, and capable of meeting deadlines. Working in a highly collaborative team environment the Senior Accountant will assist with the financial management and reporting of the Commission.

The duties of the position include, but are not limited to:

• Month end close including preparation of financial statements and related working papers, general ledger account reconciliations, accruals, supporting schedules and variance analysis
• Oversee accounting processes to ensure accuracy, timeliness and completeness of record keeping
• Oversee trust fund accounting and reporting ensuring all transactions performed in compliance with applicable Law Society trust rules
• Prepare working paper file for annual review of financial records by auditors – including financial statement, federal/provincial funding claim and trust fund audits. Assist auditors as required.
• Assist in the preparation of budgets and forecasts throughout the fiscal year
• Coordinate with Human Resources department to ensure accurate recording and reconciliation of payroll
• Assist with providing guidance to accounting staff in performing daily accounting tasks
• Assist in documentation and monitoring of internal controls
• Duties associated with accounts receivable and accounts payable
• Provide ongoing recommendations for improvements to financial policies and processes
• Assist with knowledge sharing, mentoring and training of co-workers and new employees as required
• Other related office duties as may be assigned

The successful candidate will have a diploma or degree with a concentration in accounting (accounting designation would be an asset) combined with 5 or more years of progressive experience in a similar role. Candidates should be well versed in all aspects of financial statement presentation with high attention to detail and accuracy, demonstrated good judgement and high standards of ethics, professionalism and confidentiality. Additionally candidates must have strong written and verbal communication skills combined with advanced computer skills - particularly in Accounting Software and Excel.

The successful candidate will be required to provide a Certificate of Conduct with Vulnerable Sector Check prior to commencing employment.

Employees of the Commission are covered under the Provincial Government Pension Plan and Health Plan. An optional Dental Plan and Disability Plan are also available. The salary range for this position is $64,742 to $84,164 (HL – 19 Pay Scale) annually.
