Mechanical Design Engineer

Job description
Design, develop, and detail mechanical components, equipment, and machinery, with a focus on material handling systems for manufacturing processes, primarily automotive.
Apply knowledge of engineering principles to design products with consideration to fabrication, operation, application, installation, and/or repair of mechanical products.
Perform engineering studies to develop reliable and optimum material handling systems based on engineering practice or customer requirements.
- Perform engineering assignments to design and detail mechanical conveyor systems and components by using AutoCAD and Inventor.
- Detail the mechanical components and structural items. This includes dimensioning, Bill of Material updates, modification to existing/standard drawings, etc.
- Communicate with customers, vendors and internal departments as needed.
- Interface with fabrication / manufacturing teams.
- Support field commissioning and modifications. Attend Plant and Construction site field inspections.
Applications Engineering
- Perform engineering studies to develop reliable and optimal material handling systems based on best engineering practice or customer requirements.
- Design and develop conveyor systems and equipment, and standard cost evaluations for new conveyor equipment.
- Estimate costs for mechanical and structural components of material handling installation costs.
- Assist sales or technical service with the complete bid proposal development.
- Interface with customer engineers to gather system requirements, then translate the requirement to functional technical specifications.
- Make technical presentations of solutions to customer engineers.
Assist in supplier assessment and business sourcing.
- Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited engineering program with 3 to 5 years relevant industry experience.
- Experience working within fast-paced, complex, dynamic, multi-cultural business environment.
- Enjoy working both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work under pressure with time constraints.
- Comfortable as a speaker and proficient with presentation tools.
- Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
- Exceedingly strong work ethic, very reliable with a positive “can do” attitude.
- Pass a security background check.
- Availability to travel approximately 25% of the time.
Must be legally able to work in Canada.
Skills Required:
• Must have superb communication, problem solving and organizational skills.
• Competent in MS Office: Outlook, Word, and Excel, as well as Teams.
• Exceptional working knowledge and experience with AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor.
• Knowledge of mechanical systems (motors/chains), structural materials (steel beams/channels/angles), Steel machining/welding practices desired.
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and knowledge, as well as a certain degree of creativity is desired.
Applications Engineering -
• Must have experience in system design and implementation in an industrial or manufacturing environment, within the automotive industry would be an asset.
• Strong skills and experience in estimating total costs for mechanical and structural components of material handling systems. Experience in bid proposals a plus.
• Knowledge of manufacturing methods and procedures.
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes, quality and inspection requirements, and measurement techniques.
