Job description
Engineering Manager - Data (Brazil)
Based in Washington, D.C., Quorum is a fast-growing software company and is the leading provider of workflow software and information services for government affairs professionals across the corporations, non-profits, associations, and governmental end-markets. Quorum allows users to manage stakeholder engagement, launch grassroots advocacy campaigns, and track legislative activity at all levels of government, including federal, state and local.
Quorum provides mission-critical solutions to public affairs professionals for their work in Congress, all 50 state legislatures, major U.S. cities, the European Union, and 30+ countries around the globe. Quorum serves over 2,000 customers globally including over 50% of the Fortune 100, and has over 350 team members across the globe. The company recently acquired Capitol Canary, a market leader in grassroots advocacy software.
The Engineering Manager on the Data team will coach, manage, and support a team of 4-6 full-stack engineers and work cross-functionally with product and other dev teams. The Engineering Manager will be hands-on and own the technical roadmap planning and execution in collaboration with the Data Product Manager. In managing the individual contributors, hands-on coding and technical guidance are expected at about 50% in any given week though delegation of technical tasks is expected in most cases. The Engineering Manager is committed to delivering high-quality results and working through challenges and obstacles, all while managing expectations with various stakeholders. The Data team holds the responsibility for implementing and maintaining data scrapers and spiders. This entails a commitment to meeting agreed-upon SLAs with clients and proactively upholding high data quality standards.
What You'll Do
- First Week: You will work closely with an onboarding mentor to complete the standard engineering onboarding process and learn to ship new code to production to understand the end-to-end tech stack and software development lifecycle.
- First Month: You will be up and running with your standard managerial practices and processes, learn the ins and outs of Quorum’s Core products, technical strategy, roadmap, and challenges, and get to know the members of your team, product managers and other leaders on the technology team.
- First Six Months: You will fully own the planning and execution of the Data team and technical roadmap and milestones. You will mentor and coach existing team members to improve their skills and help bring on new team members into the organization.
- First Year: Your team will have successfully improved data quality and stability for scrapers, reflecting a steadfast commitment to meeting agreed-upon Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with clients.
About You
- You have 5+ years of relevant experience, including 2+ years as an Engineering Manager.
- You have experience with web scraping, spiders and web crawlers.
- You have experience data modeling in relational & non-relational databases, data quality, data integration, search, data visualization, and performance tuning.
- You have expertise in Quorum’s front-end and backend technologies, including must-have Python, React (or similar Javascript framework), PostgreSQL, ElasticSearch, AWS, and Linux. Django would be a plus.
- You have experience with cloud-native architectures.
- You have excellent communication skills, including good English.
- You have strong project management skills as demonstrated by a strong track record of successfully completed complex technical projects that were directly owned by you
- You believe that engineering management is a different but equal function to software engineering and you’re excited about tackling the day-to-day challenges of motivating, managing, and supporting engineers.
- You have experience with US-based companies and hybrid teams.
- This position requires approximately 50% hands-on development time.
About the Software Development Team
- We're a fast-growing team dedicated to improving our people, processes, and platform. The team is primarily structured into product-oriented squads.
- We support many different products but internally think of them as one system with a single unified codebase. We aim to build centralized systems that handle complex problems for multiple features and products.
- We’re focused on doing the important things the right way -- we write solid documentation, test our code well, design for scale, and follow defined software development processes.
- We follow best-in-class security practices to safeguard our data and application against bad actors. We regularly test and update processes and technology to fight complacency because we know good security is a continuous effort.
- We curate high-quality datasets essential for effective mapping and tracking of the government and public affairs spaces. Our datasets underpin our promise to give users the information necessary to make smart decisions influencing policy.
- We set rigorous quality standards and monitor them with a mix of programmatic and manual verifications to ensure users maintain high trust in our systems.
- We’re very close as a team and invest not only in each others’ skills and careers but also in building real relationships with one another: product development is a team sport, and we believe that it’s better (and more fun) to work on a team of people that you know well and care about.
Our Work Environment
- We are a remote-first team with flexible work options: work remotely, or you may choose to come into our office in Belo Horizonte.
