Job description

The primary role of the Guest Lecturer is to provide a series of environmental, ecological, political, and historical lectures to clients and staff. Guest Lecturers need to exhibit excellent customer service, initiation of activities, and programming to clients from around the globe. This position will be headquartered out of Union Glacier Camp but will travel as needed with clients to remote camps located at the South Pole, Gould Bay, and other remote camps.

Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE) is the most experienced deep-field operator in Antarctica, providing a wide range of guided experiences, air support, logistical back-up and safety cover for governmental research programs, independent expeditions, and tourists. We work in a worldwide market of different cultures and languages, and we fully embrace this diversity. We also have a strong environmental ethic. ALE is a Utah company with a year-round office in Salt Lake City, a seasonal operations support office in Punta Arenas, Chile, and several seasonal field camps in Antarctica.

Seasonal Information

Guest Lecturers generally work from November to January.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Creates, prepares, and delivers a series of daily lectures for up to 40 guests and staff. Lectures are generally 30 minutes or 1 hour and should be based on Antarctic history, ecology, politics, or science and should be supported by digital presentations or digital slide shows.

• Serve as a point of contact for clients, scientists, air crew and remote staff regarding information associated with traveling throughout Antarctica and Chile, safety, and camp orientation when arriving to Union Glacier.
• Planning, preparing, attending, and delivering Antarctic excursions to clients. Excursions may require driving excursion vehicles and staying overnight at our remote camps.
• In assistance with the Guest Liaisons, help plan and carry out the daily program of activities, primarily for ALE guests on fully guided trips.
• Socialize with clients during meals, on bad weather days and at any other times as required.
• Assists as needed with the Union Glacier Souvenir Shop that is located at Union Glacier.
• Participates in a variety of hands-on general remote camp activities such as shoveling snow, melting snow, organizing stock/inventory, unloading and loading aircrafts, monitoring camp for safety issues during weather events, attending staff meetings, reporting hazards, completing reports and other end of season tasks.

• Other duties as assigned

• Adaptable communication skills to reach a wide variety of clients
• Understanding of a variety of nationalities, religions, customs, and cultures represented by our clients and staff
• Ability to work seven days a week
• Ability to live in a tent in a cold weather environment
• Ability to manage people and client relations
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
• Adaptable self-started and the ability to work independently and with oversight to complete tasks.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualifications include experience with presenting a wide range of environmental, scientific, or historical information to guests and clients. A valid passport for travel to Antarctica is required.

All workers in Antarctica are required to be fluent in spoken and written English, physically fit and comfortable with physical labor, possess a valid passport, have the ability to live in a cold-weather environment, successfully pass a medical questionnaire reviewed by the Medical Director, and obtain a First Aid, CPR & AED certification prior to employment.

Compensation and Benefits

Guest Lecturers make a minimum of $220 per day and may be eligible for a higher rate depending on qualifications, certifications, and previous experience.

Benefits include food and lodging, travel expenses, industry pro-deals, paid training and accommodations at our seasonal logistics hub in Punta Arenas, Chile, and medical services provided by our Medical Team located at Union Glacier Camp.

The Guest Lecture is a seasonal contractor position.

Physical Requirements

This position involves medium work that primarily involves walking and standing for long periods of time. This position may exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents in this role typically require communicating with others to exchange information, repeating motions that may include wrists, hands and/or fingers, shoveling, assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned. Incumbents may be subjected to moving extreme temperature, consistent lighting, intense noises, and travel.

COVID Vaccine Requirement

In accordance with international travel regulations, all staff that are working or may be traveling to Chile or Antarctica must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 (SARS-COV-2).
