Job description
Reporting to the Logistics Specialist Lead, the Logistics Specialist. Provides professional customer service to internal and external clients. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate data entry, physical receiving, transferring, issuing, and inventory management of ASC and NSF material. Processes, packages, and stages an average of 12,000lbs of retrograde cargo per cruise. Offloads, receives, and delivers an average of 40,000lbs of southbound cargo per cruise. Makes recommendations concerning inventory improvement. Assists with coordination of port call planning and participates in long-shore cargo handling duties involving 20’ containers and break-bulk cargo. Successfully balances work tasking with community and volunteer tasking.
Position Responsibilities:
- Oversees the packaging, crating, and documentation, for all northbound cargo. Ensures all cargo is labeled, stored and packed properly This includes property of science, construction, operations, maintenance or other USAP agency cargo being transported from Palmer Station to CONUS, OCONUS and Punta Arenas.
- Responsible for maintaining the preliminary north-bound manifest.
- Interacts with ASC Departments, Grantees, and Subcontractors to ensure the timely arrival and receipt of material.
- Oversees quality assurance practices throughout the cargo movement and container loading and unloading process.
- Responsible for maintaining the Maximo Inventory and Shipping Modules within the Maximo Database. Manages data entry of Maximo in regard to Shipping Number creation and editing.
- Maintains records of north-bound and south-bound shipping documentation.
- Receives, stores and issues/returns materials in support of all department operations including forklift support as required. Research stock information to determine locations and stock levels using the ERP database.
- Completes electronic purchase requisition receiving and data entry for cargo received on station.
- Researches and provides WODS (wrong, overage, damaged or short) reports on any discrepancies for materials received.
- Produces standard and/or custom reports for ASC departments with-in MAXIMO.
- Conducts inventories of station supplies and maintains maps of several outside storage locations.
- Participates in long-shore cargo handling duties involving 20’ shipping containers, break-bulk and hazardous cargo weighing up to 20,000lbs. This includes handling taglines for both south-bound and north-bound cargo.
- Participate in onsite emergency response team& trainings.
- Coordinates with Grantees and ASC departments for the receiving, accurate processing, timely packing and movement of mission critical material.
- Fields and troubleshoots cargo queries presented to the Logistics department regarding cargo, MAXIMO issues and any other Logistics-related discrepancies that may arise.
- Required to operate heavy equipment to load/un-load cargo out of shipping containers and move cargo around station as requested.
- Frequently works outdoors in inclement weather for long periods of time frequently performing strenuous physical work
- Will frequently climb vertical ladders into and out of equipment and platforms to access cargo
- Supports operations that occur after normal work hours or on ASC days off.
- Responsible for maintaining Palmer Stations SDS library.
- Responsible for general housekeeping and maintains warehouse and Outside Storage Area (OSA) in an organized and clean manner.
- Other duties as assigned by Logistics department management; outdoor work will be required in varying temperatures.
Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:
- Minimum of two+ years’ experience working in any of the following fields: Inventory materials management, purchasing, warehousing, cargo, transportation, or supply chain logistics including the use of forklifts, hand trucks and other powered and non-powered lifting devices or a minimum of one season experience working in the Transportation and Logistics (T&L) department or related areas in Antarctica.

Preferred:
- Familiarity and capability to identify commodities in a specific area: Medical/Dental; Construction/Residential Repair; Automotive/Heavy & Industrial Equipment; Science/Lab Support; Food/Beverage/Retail; Office/Hotel/Janitorial Supplies; Electrical/Plumbing/Utilities/Carpentry/Fire Safety; Information Technology/Communications supplies.
- Working knowledge of materials movement, purchasing, inventory, shipping industry and hazardous materials.
- IBM Maximo experience.
- Experience with remote site logistics is highly desirable. Experience with polar logistics operations is preferred.
Physical and/or Other Requirements :
- Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
- Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
- Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
- Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
- Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
- Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
- Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
- Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States
- Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
