Job description


The primary role of the Facilities Technician is to ensure that the structures and systems employed to operate and run are maintained to a high operational standard. These systems primarily include water production, heating, and power generation. Facilities Technicians must be able to liaise with all heads of departments to ensure a quick and effective solution to problems that may be encountered.

Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE) is the most experienced deep-field operator in Antarctica, providing a wide range of guided experiences, air support, logistical back-up and safety cover for governmental research programs, independent expeditions, and tourists. We work in a worldwide market of different cultures and languages, and we fully embrace this diversity. We also have a strong environmental ethic. ALE is a Utah company with a year-round office in Salt Lake City, a seasonal operations support office in Punta Arenas, Chile, and several seasonal field camps in Antarctica.

Facilities Technicians generally work from November to January.

Minimum Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications include previous experience working in facilities, maintenance, power generation, or any other related field. A valid passport for travel to Antarctica is required.

All workers in Antarctica are required to be fluent in spoken and written English, physically fit and comfortable with physical labor, possess a valid passport, have the ability to live in a cold-weather environment, successfully pass a medical questionnaire reviewed by the Medical Director, and obtain a First Aid, CPR & AED certification prior to employment.

Compensation and Benefits

Facilities Technicians make a minimum of $190 per day and may be eligible for a higher rate depending on qualifications, certifications, and previous experience.

Benefits include living, and experiencing Antarctica, food and lodging, paid travel pre and post season, industry pro-deals, paid training and accommodations at our seasonal logistics hub in Punta Arenas, Chile, and medical services provided by our Medical Team located at Union Glacier Camp.

The Facilities Technician is a Seasonal Contractor position.

Physical Requirements

This position involves heavy work that primarily involves sitting, standing and moving. This position may exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 40 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents in this role typically require standing or sitting for prolonged periods, communicating with others to exchange information, repeating motions that may include wrists, hands and/or fingers, shoveling, assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, extreme temperature, inadequate lighting, and travel.

COVID Vaccine Requirement

In accordance with international travel regulations, all staff that are working or may be traveling to Chile or Antarctica must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 (SARS-COV-2).
