Job description

The primary role of the Kitchen Assistant is to assist in handling the catering and feeding up to 160 clients and staff by washing dishes, keeping the dining facilities, serving areas and stations clean and tidy, melting snow for water, replenishing drink and food stations, and assisting chefs in the kitchen. Kitchen Assistants are primarily located at the Union Glacier Camp in Antarctica, but may be required to operate out of other remote Antarctic camps on occasion.

Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE) is the most experienced deep-field operator in Antarctica, providing a wide range of guided experiences, air support, logistical back-up and safety cover for governmental research programs, independent expeditions, and tourists. ALE is a Utah company with a year-round office in Salt Lake City and a seasonal operations support office in Punta Arenas, Chile, and several seasonal field camps in Antarctica.

Seasonal Information

Kitchen Assistants generally work from November to January, however exact dates are flexible.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Assists in catering and feeding clients and staff at Union Glacier Camp or other Antarctic remote camps for up to 160 clients and staff
• Assisting Chefs in serving meals, food preparation, cutting and prepping ingredients
• Maintains cleanliness of kitchen and dining facilities by washing dishes, cleaning tools, washing and drying towels, cleaning tables, garbage and recycling collection, etc.
• Prepares tables, dining tent(s), food and drink stations, resupplies for remote camps, inflight meals for ski aircraft and other food service related items and facilities
• Monitors water usage
• Follows safety standards set by supervisors in accordance with health and hygiene standards in food storage and food service areas
• Participates in a variety of hands-on general remote camp activities such as shoveling snow, melting snow, organizing stock/inventory, unloading and loading aircrafts, monitoring camp for safety issues during weather events, attending staff meetings, reporting hazards, completing reports and other end of season tasks
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Kitchen Assistants must possess a current Food Safety and Food Hygiene Certificate prior to employment and a valid passport.

Previous related Kitchen Assistant experience is preferred.

All workers in Antarctica are required to be fluent in spoken and written English, physically fit and comfortable with physical labor, possess a valid passport, have the ability to live in a cold-weather environment, successfully pass a medical questionnaire reviewed by the Medical Director, and obtain a First Aid, CPR & AED certification prior to employment.

Compensation and Benefits

Kitchen Assistants make a minimum of $130 per day and may be eligible for a higher rate depending on qualifications, certifications, and previous experience.

Benefits include food and lodging, paid travel pre and post season, industry pro-deals, paid training, and accommodations at our seasonal logistics hub in Punta Arenas, Chile, and medical services provided by our Medical Team located at Union Glacier Camp.

The Kitchen Assistant is a Seasonal Contractor position.

Physical Requirements

This position involves medium work that may involve standing and moving for long periods of time. This position may exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents in this role typically require standing or sitting for prolonged periods, communicating with others to exchange information, repeating motions that may include wrists, hands and/or fingers, shoveling, assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned. Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, intense noises, and travel.

COVID Vaccine Requirement

In accordance with international travel regulations, all staff that are working or may be traveling to Chile or Antarctica must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 (SARS-COV-2).
