G&G provides complex genetic testing for a broad range of inherited conditions, serving an important role in the provision of genetic services for the province of Alberta. The Lab Assistant I position may rotate through any of the Biochemical Genetics, Cytogenetics, or Molecular Genetics laboratories, as well as the Genetic Resource Centre (GRC) co-located at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. As a Laboratory Assistant I, you may plan and organize your work responsibilities and processes to perform standard and specialized procedures alongside other lab assistants. You will be responsible for pre-analytical specimen receiving and accessioning, distributing, processing, storage, packaging and shipment of specimens as required. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, responding to inquiries; cleaning, monitoring and preventative maintenance of lab equipment and work areas; maintaining common supplies; updating inventories and data sheets; and participating in training, lab quality and safety requirements.

Description:

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Previous technical experience with processing samples. Minimum 1 year of accessioning experience. Excellent typing and database entry abilities (both speed and accuracy). Experience with Microsoft Office Suite of programs. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment. Superior organizational and time management skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize work and deliver accurate work under stressful conditions. Demonstrated problem solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with handling and packaging sample for external send-out. Post-secondary education in Molecular Biology would be an asset. Experience in a Molecular or Genetics lab would be an asset. Experience with Connect Care Beaker would be a bonus.
